Prada Boat Bling, Cabs Aboard the Cabernet Sauvignon (Or, America's Cup + Wine = Amazing)
filed under: Events,
Last Thursday I joined an intrepid group of tasters - mostly wine buyers and a sprinkling of Master Somms - aboard the Cabernet Sauvignon for a day of tasting and gawking during prelims for the America's Cup (Napa is the official wine region of the 34th America's Cup). The Bay was bangin' (heh, alliteration made me say it) with Napa wines courtesy of the Napa Valley Vintners, who always put on a fabulous affair, and lots of boats in various stages of stalling and staring. Alas due to the distance the race was better viewed from the wide-screens inside, but the atmosphere on board was still electric. Dennis Cakebread's wayfarers and peaked 'do (was that intentional or courtesy of some serious wind?) were sunny highlights.
* Master Sommelier Geoff Kruth (who somehow manages to be a star bev director at The Farmhouse AND simultaneously run operations for the Guild of Sommeliers) shared a link for his own label, the intriguingly named Lost and Found Wine
* Ryan Hill of Hill Family Estate shared news of his family's Secret Garden Tour, accessible via appt w/ produce going to the likes of Atelier Crenn, Benu and the Laundry.
* Though temps ranged throughout the day - as they're wont to do on the bay - the setting seemed perfect for whites in spite of the boat's name. My favs were a 2011 Trefethen Dry Riesling, '11 Truchard Vineyards Roussanne and '11 Stag's Leap Winery Viognier. The '11 Cuvaison Vin Gris rose from Carneros rounded out my top picks, because if you're not drinking rose when on a yacht you're doing something wrong.
